‼️ A Few Reminders about New Year's Eve Celebrations

In fact, celebrating the festivals of a community means imitating them and becoming like them. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever is like a community, he is one of them." (Abu Dawud)

Regarding the hadith, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya (رَحِمَہُ اللّہُ) said: "Although the zahir of this hadith does not entail the disbelief of those who resemble them, it at least entails the forbiddenness of resembling them."

'Umar b. Khattab (رضي الله عنه) said: "Do not enter the churches of the polytheists on their feast days. For the wrath of Allah is upon them."

Ibn Qayyim (رَحِمَہُ اللّہُ) said: "It is unanimously haram to congratulate the symbols of disbelief that are special to them. For example, greeting their festivals and fasting days and saying, "Happy Eid" or "Happy Eid" or "Happy Eid", etc., is haraam, even if one is free from disbelief. This behavior is the same as congratulating someone for prostrating himself on a cross, and it is a greater sin in the sight of Allah.

This is a worse congratulation than congratulating those who drink alcohol, kill people, commit fornication, which is forbidden, and similar evils. Those for whom religion has no value fall into this without knowing how bad it is. Whoever congratulates a person for his sin, innovation or disbelief has incurred the wrath and anger of Allah."

Abu Hafs al-Hanafi (رَحِمَہُ اللّہُ) said: "Whoever gives an egg as a gift to a polytheist out of respect for their day has blasphemed Allaah."

Regarding the statement of Allaah, "They are the ones who do not bear false witness, and when they are confronted with vain and useless speech, they pass by with dignity." Abu'l-Aliyah, Tawus, Muhammad b. Sīrīn, Dahhaq, Rabi b. Anas and other scholars (رَحِمَہُم اللّہُُ) have said that what is meant by falsehood is the festivals of the polytheists.

Imam Zehebi (رَحِمَہُ اللّہُ) said: "If someone says, 'We do not mean to be like them,' it is said: The very act of observing or participating in their festivals and special days is haraam in itself. This is because of the following authentic hadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade praying at the time of sunrise and sunset and said: "It rises between the two horns of Satan, and that is when the disbelievers prostrate themselves." The one who prays does not mean this, for if he did, he would be a disbeliever. But it is forbidden to agree with them and participate in them."

Practices such as bingo, national lottery, pine gifts, wearing Christmas dresses, slaughtering turkeys, participating in festivities specific to that day, consuming alcoholic beverages, etc. on New Year's Day are not only a celebration of that day, but also a sin. Muslim families should be aware of their responsibilities and protect themselves and their children from such activities, and should not encourage their children to participate in them, but should direct them to alternative Islamic holidays and activities. Otherwise, these practices are at the very least haram, depending on one's intentions. If the intention is not just to have fun and to please the heart, but to actually congratulate them on their holy days, then this is an act of kufr.

Another aspect of this issue is that while some Muslims are living on the streets with their children and children because they have no place to stay, at the same time, going to waste in the name of entertainment that meets the needs of all these poor people on one night is not an attitude that any rational person, beyond Islam, would adopt.

Especially today, the situation of our people in Gaza is well known. We ask Allah for peace.

On the one hand, seeing Muslims starving and forced to eat tree leaves, cats, etc., while on the other hand celebrating the holidays of Westerners who recklessly exploit our resources would be like celebrating their exploitation.

We ask Allah for forgiveness and pardon.
